Each room includes a cozy reading/quiet corner with well-stocked bookshelves, a dramatic play space, an open art area, a blocks/engineering area, and writing, math, and science areas. Children have access to a wide variety of open-ended Montessori-quality materials and sensory tables. Every classroom schedule includes blocks of uninterrupted child-led play time.
Indoor Gym
Our giant indoor gross motor room provides hours of fun as well as physical development on days that are too cold, too rainy, or even too hot. Our equipment includes bikes, scooters, slides, balls and hoops, a dramatic play area, and a climbing wall on the stage. Each classroom has one hour of gross motor play time in the morning and in the afternoon every day, either in the gym or on the playground depending on the weather.
Outdoor Playground
We have two large fenced outdoor areas for play. Our courtyard is a grassy area where we run around the maze, read stories, and play games. Our primary playground includes swings, bikes, climbing equipment, slides, and a giant sandbox. Each classroom has one hour of gross motor play time in the morning and in the afternoon every day, either in the gym or on the playground depending on the weather.
Our Building
Total Child is housed in the First United Methodist Church of Evanston. FUMC provides Total Child with the use of the building as part of its mission of outreach to the community.
There is no religious component to any of Total Child’s programs.
Summer Program Included
All programs include our summer program, which runs from June to early August. Classes spend their days joyfully outside on our playground, playing in our courtyard and expansive lawn, cooling off with water on splash pads, sprinklers, and water tables, and visiting nearby parks!
